This temple was built by Ramses II during his kingdom. The temple was covered by sand until 1813 when JL Burckhardt accidentally found pieces of the colossal figures. And in 1815, when the sand was entirely removed the door was discovered. Between 1964 and 1986, the rescue efforts to save this beautiful temple of Lake Nesser allowed the transfer of the temple to a higher ground.
The temple is dedicated to the most important gods of the New Spain: Pthat, Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte, and also to the pharaoh Ramses II. The entrance to the great temple of Ramses is about 35 meters long and 31 meters in height. There are four important colossis: the statues of Ramses II, which are accompanied by small pictures, placed between the legs, representing their family, members of the royal family. The colossis illustrate Ramses sat with his hands on the thighs. The colossis were carved directly into the rock and were made with great care. Three of them are in good condition, but there is one broke, is still only from the waist down, with his head and body on the floor.
